When Mika Ninagawa won the Konica Photo Encouragement award in 1998, the photographer took the opportunity to travel around the work, and published her first book, 17 9 ‘97. First trained as a graphic designer, Mika Ninagawa is a contemporary photographer with a distinctive style, characterized by its super-saturated colors and cinematic framing. Pioneer in the “girly photography” (term coined by photography critic Kotaro Iizawa), 17 9 ‘97 was published in the midst of this era that emerged in Tokyo in the 90s - diaristic, snapshot photography and ‘girly culture’, sharing a vision and a quest of their own queendom and intimacy, and taking ownership of women representation back from a male-dominated industry.
